Laparoscopic Urology

Laparoscopic urology is a field of urology that utilizes minimally invasive surgical techniques to diagnose and treat various urological conditions. Laparoscopic procedures involve making small incisions in the abdomen through which a laparoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light source) to view the internal organs and surgical instruments are inserted to perform the surgery. Compared to traditional open surgery, Laparoscopic urological surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique.

Advantages of opting for Laparoscopic surgery over traditional open surgery include:

  • Quicker recovery times
  • Minimum scar
  • Reduced postoperative pain
  • Decreased blood loss
  • Shorter hospital stay

In urology, laparoscopic procedures are commonly used for conditions such as kidney stones, kidney cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, ureteral strictures, and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

BKC seems to be at the forefront of these advancements, offering a diverse range of laparoscopic surgeries to address kidney and urological issues. Some common laparoscopic urological procedures include:

  1. Kidney Transplant:
While transplanting kidney from donor to recipient patient (laparoscopic live donor nephrectomies)
  2. Nephrectomies and its types:
    1. Simple Nephrectomy is the surgical removal of the kidney. This is done when the kidney is non-functional and is the site of infection.
    2. Partial Nephrectomy: A partial nephrectomy is a surgical procedure to remove a portion of kidney while preserving as much healthy kidney tissue as possible. It’s also called nephron-sparing surgery. This technique is one of the preferred treatment options for small to medium kidney tumors, and other conditions that can affect kidneys.
    3. Radical Nephrectomies: A radical nephrectomy is a type of cancer removal surgery where your entire kidney is removed, as well as the fat surrounding it, and sometimes the adrenal gland and lymph nodes.
    4. Renal Cyst Decortications: Renal cyst decortication is a surgical procedure to remove the wall of a large kidney (renal) cyst so that the fluid can drain. This method uses 3 to 5 small incisions to remove kidney cysts.
  1. Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy: Removal of one or both adrenal glands.
  2. Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy: Removal of the prostate gland for prostate cancer.
  3. Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty: It is a minimally invasive surgical repair of a blockage in the ureteropelvic junction (between the kidney and ureter).
  4. Laparoscopic Cystectomy: It is a minimally invasive technique for partial or complete removal of the bladder for bladder cancer.
  5. Laparoscopic Ureterolithotomy: Removal of stones from the ureter.

These procedures require specialized training and expertise in laparoscopic techniques. While laparoscopic surgery offers many benefits, it may not be suitable for all patients or conditions, and the decision to undergo laparoscopic surgery should be made in consultation with a urologist based on individual circumstances and medical history.
